Over recent years, the Da Nang sports sector has played a vital role in training and providing outstanding athletes for national squads. They have included race walkers Nguyen Thi Thanh Phuc and Nguyen Thanh Ngung, swimmer Hoang Quy Phuoc, Judo player Dao Thi Thao Nguyen, badminton players Nguyen Thuy Linh and Nguyen Thi Phuong Ha, tennis player Pham Minh Tuan, and boxers Pham Cong Hung and Nguyen Van Gioi.

In addition, some promising young players have met the requirements of their coaches and gradually proved their key positions in the Da Nang team. Included are weightlifter Nguyen Van Duc, and swimmers Ngo Tien Phap, Tran Dinh Thanh, Hoang Phan Nhat Linh.

However, the city's sports sector has yet to make significant contributions to the national sports.

In particular, at ASIAD 2018, the city had 14 athletes competing in swimming, taekwondo, badminton, rowing, tennis, Ju-jitsu, weightlifting, and football. Nevertheless, only 2 of them namely Pham Thi Hue and Duong Thi Thanh Minh brought home silver and bronze medals respectively.

Earlier at the 29th SEA Games, local athletes only bagged 4 silver medals and 2 bronze.

Mr Nguyen Dong Hai, Deputy Director of the Da Nang Athlete Training Centre, remarked that the city is facing a serve shortage of sporting facilities, whilst the regimens for athletes are poor.

The local sports sector is targeting to gain more achievements at the 8th National Sports Festival which is slated to take place in Ha Noi in November.

In order to reach its target, the sector is focusing on training promising young players who have the ability to take gold medals, and increasing checks on the training of athletes in such main sports events as swimming, diving, track and field, weightlifting, rowing, and taekwondo.

Importance is being attached to providing each athlete with a specific regimen, and promoting rehabilitation treatment after sports injuries for local athletes.

For the long-term goal, the local sports sector will pay special attention to enhancing the coaching quality for young athletes, and sending promising young ones to strong sports countries for training.

Currently, an appeal for public donations is being made by the city authorities to invest into such the city’s high-achievement sports as badminton, tennis and volleyball. Heed is being paid to coordinating with the municipal Department of Education and Training to organise sports movements at local schools to seek young sports talents.
