Outstanding athletes and coaches at ASIAD 2018 honoured

On Monday, a ceremony took place in Da Nang to honour and reward outstanding coaches and athletes who recorded outstanding achievements at the recent Asian Games (ASIAD) 2018 in Indonesia.

According to Mr Nguyen Dong Hai, Deputy Director of the Da Nang Athlete Training Centre, at ASIAD 2018, the city had 14 athletes competing in swimming, taekwondo, badminton, rowing, tennis, Ju-jitsu, weightlifting, and football.

In particular, athlete Duong Thi Thanh Minh brought home a bronze medal in the women’s Ne-waza Ju-Jitsu 49kg event. Meanwhile, rower Pham Thi Hue, along with her teammates namely Dinh Thi Hao, Tran Thi An and Le Thi Hien, won a silver medal in rowing.

The city athletes’ performances helped Viet Nam secure 17th place out of 45 countries and territories worldwide in the ASIAD 2018 final medal table, with 4 gold, 16 silver, and 18 bronze medals.

On behalf of the coaches and athletes at ASIAD 2018, Ms Minh and rowing coach Tong Huu Dung thanked the city leaders for their support over the past years. They also expressed their thanks to leaders of the municipal Department of Culture and Sports, and the city Athlete Training Centre for creating extra motivation for the athletes in training and competing.

They also promised to exert greater efforts to gain even more achievements for the city, and the country as a whole.

In his remarks at the ceremony, municipal People’s Committee Vice Chairman Dang Viet Dung highly praised the local athletes and coaches for their efforts and achievements in training and competing at ASIAD 2018.

Vice Chairman Dung also urged the athletes to make greater efforts to gain more success at the upcoming national and international tournaments, including the National Sports Festival which is scheduled to take place in Ha Noi in November.

He took the opportunity to ask leaders of the sports sector to do their utmost to promote the development of mass sports movements across the city.

On the occasion, Mr Dung presented Certificates of Merit and cash prizes totalling 65 million VND to Judo coach Nguyen Duy Phu, rowing coach Tong Huu Dung, and athletes Pham Thi Hue and Duong Thi Thanh Minh in recognition of their outstanding achievements at ASIAD 2018.
