The festival to honour ancestors and pray for peace is very important to Nam O villagers |
The festival consisted of two parts: a number of solemn rituals to honour ancestors and to pray for peace, happiness and prosperity throughout the year, along with a wide range of exciting cultural activities.
In particular, the solemn rituals included a ‘nhuong on - tong on’ procession, burning incense, and a tea party. Meanwhile, the festive activities were folk games bearing the imprint of the village such as countryside market, and a contest to make traditional fish salad. In which, the most remarkable and special part was the mass cultural festival ‘the whole village sing together’.
Villager Mai Hoang expressed his hope that the festival will be promoted in the future in order to preserve the national tradition and the typical cultural imprint of the ancient Vietnamese people.
The festival has a great cultural and spiritual meaning for Nam O villagers as it expresses villagers’ desire for a peaceful and prosperous life. Besides, the event shows the solidarity of the villagers, as well as commemorates and pays tribute to heroes and martyrs who bravely sacrificed for their homeland and country.
