Traditional boat race on Da Nang's Han River celebrates National Day

As part of the celebrations for the 78th anniversary of National Day (September 2), the 2023 Da Nang Open Traditional Boat Race for the VTV8 Cup took place on the Han River on Saturday morning.

Co-organised by the Da Nang Department of Culture and Sports and the Viet Nam Television Centre in the Central Viet Nam and Highlands Regions (VTV8), the event marked its return after nearly 6 years of interruption, attracting much attention from thousands of people and tourists.

The boat race had the participation of 280 male athletes and 170 female athletes from 23 teams of 13 units, namely Hai Chau, Thanh Khe, Son Tra, Ngu Hanh Son, Cam Le, Lien Chieu and Hoa Vang districts in Da Nang; plus teams from Quang Nam Province such as Minh An in Hoi An City, Dien An in Dien Ban Town, Duy Tan and Duy Vinh both in Duy Xuyen District, Lac Cau in Thang Binh District, and Dai Nghia in Dai Loc District.

There were 17 and 15 members in each boat competing in the men’s and women’s categories respectively. The male teams were required to complete 3 laps, equivalent to 7.5km, whilst the ladies’ teams had to complete just 2 laps, equivalent to 5km. Each unit was allowed to send a maximum of two male teams and two female teams for the tournament.

The race was broadcast live on VTV8 channel and its digital infrastructure platforms. In addition, there were sailing performances on the Han River.

In the male category, Team Duy Vinh from Quang Nam Province’s Duy Xuyen District won the first prize, with Hoa Vang District second and Son Tra 1 third.  As for the female teams, Team Lac Cau from Quang Nam Province’s Thang Binh District took first place, whilst Hai Chau District came second and Lien Chieu District finished third.

In addition, two fourth prizes were given to Thanh Khe men's team and Cam Le women's team. There were two Fair-play Award and the Best Fan Award to the teams.
