Literature and arts in general, and theatre in particular, are delicate areas of culture, reflecting the human pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty, contributing to the spiritual foundation of society. Over the past 15 years, theatre artists in Da Nang have continuously worked to create outstanding, high-quality artistic works that contribute to the cause of national development and defence.

During its 15 years of development, the Da Nang Theatre Artists' Association has actively organised events and fulfilled its duties as assigned by the city and the municipal Union of Literature and Arts Associations. Its members, from veteran artists to younger generations, have consistently been involved in creating and performing for the public and tourists alike. According to the association’s president, Mr. Tran Ngoc Tuan, the association has over 80 members, including 5 People’s Artists, 20 Meritorious Artists, 1 People’s Artisan, and 5 Meritorious Artisans.

Despite many challenges, theatre artists in Da Nang remain committed to preserving traditional values and maintaining national identity. "We remind young artists to preserve the essence of traditional theatre in the face of foreign cultural influences. As the late General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong said, 'Culture illuminates the way for the people,' and we must regard ourselves as silkworms, consuming leaves and producing golden silk for society," Mr. Tuan explained.

Compared to other localities, Da Nang’s theatre scene is thriving in both professional and amateur circles. In the professional sector, most members are associated with the Nguyen Hien Dinh Tuong Theatre, which annually organises more than 200 performances. The theatre’s "Tuong down the street" programme and its introduction of Tuong art in schools have been particularly well received.

In 2024, the theatre proudly welcomed a new People's Artist, Phan Van Quang. Mr. Quang expressed his pride in the younger generation of well-trained and dedicated artists, emphasising the importance of passing on the craft to ensure that Quang Nam - Da Nang's Tuong theatre tradition continues.

The city’s amateur theatre scene is also vibrant, with a focus on promoting Bai Choi singing. Artists such as Tu Minh Hiep, Kim Quyen, Phu Tan, Nguyen Thi Le, and directors Le Thanh and Quang Ky have produced many high-quality programmes, earning accolades at non-professional competitions.

Artist Phu Tan commented, "The efforts of artists have helped 'Bai Choi' gain recognition. Performances at the folk space near Dragon Bridge attract significant support from both locals and tourists. Bai Choi has become a staple at village festivals, drawing large audiences."

According to Mr. Bui Van Tieng, President of the Union of Literature and Arts Associations, traditional theatre has faced challenges nationwide, particularly in engaging younger audiences. However, Da Nang's theatre has stood out, thanks to the dedication of its artists in preserving Tuong and Bai Choi, both of which are recognised as intangible cultural heritage.

Moving forward, the Da Nang Theatre Artists' Association should expand exchanges and collaborations to enhance the skills of performers and musicians and prioritise the preservation of traditional arts. They should also focus on presenting well-structured Tuong performances to engage a wider audience, both domestically and internationally.
