Dong Dinh Museum – a dramatic setting for antiques and contemporary art
The Dong Dinh Museum opened its doors to the public on 28 January 2011, and has become one of Da Nang’s most-visited tourist attractions.
Nestled on the Son Tra Peninsula, the museum is a beautiful and peaceful place to see wonderful works of art and valuable antiques. The owner of the museum is Meritorious Artist Doan Huy Giao, who is a nationally-renowned poet and documentary film director as well as a very ardent collector of antiques and art. He has spent more than 30 years collecting artefacts from across the country and another 10 years on building his privately-owned museum, which is the first of its kind in the central region. The museum boasts hundreds of items dating back up to 2,500 years, which showcase the rich cultural heritages of Sa Huynh, Champa, Oc Eo, Dong Son and Dai Viet. Apart from these antiques, the owner has also collected items from Vietnamese minority ethnic groups with the aim of preserving and promoting their remarkable cultural values.
In addition, there is an exhibition area devoted to contemporary art containing numerous paintings and statues from some famous domestic artisans. The museum is also home to a pottery kiln, and a stilt house for archiving research documents. It is an excellent place, in peaceful surroundings, for domestic artists to stay and be creative.
One striking feature of this museum is its wonderful garden house, ideal for nature lovers. The museum is a really tranquil place which is very different from the nearby crowded and noisy beaches.
Currently open only at weekends and holidays, the museum can be booked for tour groups in advance.
The Dong Dinh Museum is a must for those interested in discovering ecological tourism on the Son Tra Peninsula. For anyone who wants to relax in a quiet and beautiful environment, this museum offers a perfect location away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
