A highly-praised project to apply deep-learning into image-based plant disease detection, created by Do Minh Huy and Pham Nguyen Nam Khoa from the Da Nang-based Le Quy Don Senior High School for the Gifted, will compete at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) 2019, which will be held from 12 to 17 May in Phoenix, Arizona, the U.S.A.

The project, jointly developed by the 2 pupils, helps farmers monitor and detect plant diseases easily.

The project is one of the most outstanding projects nationwide to have been selected by the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training to advance to Intel ISEF 2019.

Previously, this project brought home a first prize at the National Science and Technology Contest 2019 for the southern region recently held in Ho Chi Minh City.

The brainchild created by Huy and Khoa helps farmers find it very easy to access information about crops, diseases, pesticide residues, and crop nutrition, hereby timely conducting measures to eliminate diseases.

The Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training asked functional local bodies to continue assisting the 2 pupils in perfecting their project, and ensuring the funding for its participation in Intel ISEF 2019.

Intel ISEF, the world’s largest international pre-college science competition, is an annual science fair, and is owned and administered by the Society for Science & the Public, a non-profit organisation based in Washington, DC.

The international event unites the top young scientific minds, showcasing their talents on an international stage, where doctoral-level scientists review and judge their work.

Each year, approximately 1,800 high school students from more than 75 countries, regions, and territories are awarded the opportunity to showcase their independent research and compete for on average $5 million in prizes at Intel ISEF. The competition focuses on identifying, inspiring, and engaging the world's next STEM generation.
