Results of the all-important annual exam, held every year around June, are used to determine whether a pupil qualifies for graduation from senior high school, and acts as a placement test for junior college and university entrance in Viet Nam.

Y’s house is nestled in a small alley in An Hai Bac Ward, Son Tra District, but it is locked from outside in the daytime. Her father now works far away from home, whilst her sick mother has left the residence for treatment of her disease, and Y now works at a shoe store located on Phan Thanh Street as a part-time sales assistant in order to support herself and her family.

The girl said her parents had always encouraged her to pursue education no matter how hard life could be for the family.

Given her strong determination and great endeavour, Y was admitted to a special class for mathematically gifted pupils at the Phan Chau Trinh Senior School with high scores, which made her family fully satisfied.

During the 3 years of senior high school study, thanks to the self discipline to create the pressure for more efforts, Y recorded excellent academic results, receiving high applause from her teachers and coursemates.

Her good study was built up by her diligence, firmly grasping lessons in the class, practising tough exercises, and acquiring more knowledge through the Internet.

Y said had been painstakingly preparing for the tough exams like any of her peers. With the sprit of fondness for learning, the strong-willed girl never surrendered herself to problematic exercise in the natural science subjects. Thanks to this, her proficiency in these tough subjects have been enhance considerably.

The talented girl is now waiting for her enrollment into the Faculty of International Business at the city-based University of Economics, and it is no doubt that, with impressive scores mention above, her higher education dream is likely to come true. Y said this university is expected to grant full scholarships to those who gained over 26.5 scores.
