Da Nang strives to attract more international students

In recent years, the management and training of international students at member units of the University of Da Nang has continuously enhanced. Thanks to that, the city is on right track to attract more and more international students from other countries for study in Da Nang.

Mr. Kiengcay Umvong, currently an educational quality assurance inspector from the Department of Education and Sports of Attapeu Province, Laos, is a student at the University of Education, a member school of the University of Da Nang. After graduating from university, he attended a graduate course and received a master’s degree at the Ha Noi University of Industry. However, when deciding to become a postgraduate student, Mr. Umvong chose the Da Nang University of Education. The doctoral thesis topic that Umvong is working on is ‘Developing a team of high school education administrators in 4 provinces of Southern Laos’.

“The teachers guided and supported them wholeheartedly in studying and researching. The Da Nang University of Education has a very thoughtful policy of arranging food and accommodation, creating all favourable conditions. Thanks to that, I focused on work and research. I will try to complete the thesis well, bring knowledge accumulated from Viet Nam back home and take care of building the local education system.” Mr. Umvong said.   

Similarly, Cho Hanbe, a South Korean national, currently a fourth year student from the Faculty of International Business, University of Economics, University of Da Nang. The whole family moved to the Da Nang because of his father’s job, Cho Hanbe continued to nurture his college dream in this coastal city.

According to Cho Hanbe, at first, it is difficult for foreign students to learn a new language and adapt himself to a new environment. However, teachers and friends are always willing to help and support him without any conditions. At the same time, students welcome activities, military semesters, cultural festivals and sports exchanges have helped Cho Hanbe as well as other international students become much more confident.

In the 2022 - 2023 school year, the University of Da Nang trained 717 foreign students and trainees to study at member universities and affiliated units. Among them, the majority came from Southeast Asian and Asian countries and the rest come from Australia, United Kingdom, Belgium, France, United States, Russia, Switzerland, Lithuania, Hungary, Sweden, Germany and Nigeria.

According to MSc. Ho Long Ngoc, the Deputy Head of the Department of Science and International Cooperation, the University of Da Nang, in recent years, the management and training of international students has always received the attention and care of the university leaders at all levels.

Member universities and affiliated training units regularly organise many activities to improve the quality and effectiveness of training, management and care for spiritual and material life to support and accompany students to save their lives. Students can feel secure in studying and practicing with many creative, appropriate, and diverse forms.

At the same time, special heed has been paid to promoting international cooperation with many partners, organising more and more training programmes in English, Vietnamese language training and fostering programmes for international students and interns, and implementing many cooperation agreements to enhance international student exchanges.

Assoc. Prof., PhD. Le Quang Son, the Deputy Director of the University of Da Nang, said that training international students is considered one of the strategic contents that not only brings value to learners, connects, exchanges and develops academically, but also contributes to enhancing prestige, creating an environment for internationalisation of higher education, and positively contributing to cohesive relationships and sustainable cooperation in the context of Viet Nam's increasingly deep integration with the world.

“In the coming time, member universities and affiliated training units will continue to improve promotional activities, introduce training programmes, training and support for international students. In paraell with that, attention will be paid to creating a comfortable, friendly and respectful learning and creative environment that respects cultural diversity so that the University of Da Nang becomes an increasingly prestigious and attractive destination and attracts many international students and  interns.”, Assoc. Prof., PhD. Le Quang Son said.
