Learning culture and history through visual experience
In addition to theories at schools, learning culture and history through extracurricular activities at relic sites, museums, craft villages, and movie theaters helps pupils and students gain new, interesting, and easily receptive experiences.
This form of learning has been widely deployed throughout Da Nang, bringing positive effects, and contributing to educating and arousing pride and sense of responsibility in the young generation.

Diverse forms of education
The recent craze of the movie 'Dao, Pho and Piano' (Peach Blossoms, Pho and Piano) is a concrete proof that young people love history. It is originally a documentary film about history and war so it is not widely popular or communicated.
However, for some reason, this movie suddenly became a "hot movie" sought after by young people. In Da Nang, the movie was shown at the Le Do Cinema from February 25, but from February 24, hundreds of people, mostly young people, waited in line in front of the cinema for many hours to buy tickets.
Every day, the Le Do Cinema has 3 screenings with 130 movie tickets each.
Nguyen Thi Phuong Mai, a student at the University of Education under the University of Da Nang said that "The film's content has many very touching details associated with historical milestones of the nation. Through the film, I am even more impressed with the resilience and indomitability of our ancestors during the struggle to regain independence for the country. I think that such films should be more widely publicised so that young people can easily access and understand more about our country's history".
Da Nang is one of the first localities to bring the movie “Dao, Pho and Piano’ to serve people, especially young people.
In addition to movies, the city also has many forms of cultural and historical education for pupils and students. Included are visiting cultural - historical relics and museums; organising history-related knowledge contests; and introducing Tuong (classical drama) to schools.
Among them, museum tours or extracurricular classes at museums have been jointly organised by the local education and training sector and the culture sector for many years.
According to the Da Nang Museum, the "Extracurricular Lessons" activity has been carried out since 2014 with the purpose of creating lively lessons for pupils through documents and artifacts on display.
Most of educational topics have a connection between local history education at all levels and the museum's display content, meeting the practical learning needs of children.
During the activity, pupils are provided with historical knowledge through exciting competitions and games. This intuitive, vivid and suggestive way of conveying helps students become more interested in local and national historical knowledge, arousing their love and passion for studying history, and the spirit of patriotism and national pride among the young generation.
Concretising knowledge from books
Recently, junior and senior high schools have been promoting activities to bring students to experience at traditional craft villages.
Since 2023, dozens of groups of pupils from schools citywide have visited the Huong Lang Co fish sauce making facility in Hoa Hiep Nam Ward, Lien Chieu District, to learn about how to make Nam O fish sauce - a national intangible cultural heritage.
Similarly, some schools have taken their pupils to learn about the traditional fish sauce making craft at Mr. Huynh Van Muoi's facility located in in Man Thai Ward, Son Tra District.
At these places, pupils are introduced to the traditional way of making fish sauce. They have the opportunity to mix the ingredients by themselves, make the finished products, and bring home the jars of fish sauce they made themselves as gifts for their families.
Mr. Huynh Van Muoi said “In modern life, traditional craft villages are in danger of disappearing. Therefore, we are ready to welcome pupils and students to learn and visit, helping their learning of culture and history become more vivid. In addition, letting pupils make their own products will make them feel more impressed”.
Teacher Than Thi Thu from the Thanh Khe Senior High School, Thanh Khe District highlighted the significance of taking students to traditional craft villages in not only supplementing classroom lessons and enhancing social knowledge for them, but also improving their communication and exchange skills, which children of this age are in dire need.
Craft village experience activities help pupils have a realistic view, make specific observations and meet real people and real things, thereby remembering lessons faster and longer.
“Extracurricular lessons first help children gain more social understanding, then foster love for the country, life values, and local cultural beauty. You must know what special cultural identity your homeland has. Therefore, you also have the responsibility to preserve and promote the traditional craft villages in the future," Ms. Thu shared.
