Free computing class for people with disabilities
Lasting from mid-March to late April, the free computing class for disabled students not only brings joy but also facilitate them to access information technology (IT).
Each class session, students practice an exercise. Through that exercise, students grasp basic knowledge. |
In order to promote the school's strengths, take advantage of its expertise in social activities, and contribute to digital transformation, starting from mid-March, the Youth Union organisation of the Viet Nam - Korea University of Information and Communications Technology (VKU) opened a basic computing class for students with disabilities at the Da Nang Red Cross Cociety's Charity Career Orientation Centre.
The intention of the class was to help the centre’s students have the opportunity to access IT, and perform basic operations on computers such as turning on/off the computer, using the internet to search for selective information, edit documents on Word, find directions on computers and phones, learn about the city's public service portal, and create a page to sell handicrafts.
The class w held weekly on Monday Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Computers serving teaching and learning were provided by the VKU.
After a period of studying, from not knowing anything, the students now can perform some operations on the computer |
Using computer for the first time, Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh could not hide her surprise and strange feeling when performing operations on the computer. With her own perseverance and the enthusiastic guidance of volunteers, after nearly two months, she was able to perform a number of simple tasks, including searching for information on the internet, typing Vietnamese with accents, and editing documents on Word.
Although Ms. Anh's process of performing operations on the computer is still slow, compared to the beginning when she did not know anything, it was the effort of both the teacher and the learner.
Mr. Nguyen Bao Tich, a member of the Standing Committee of VKU Youth Union organisation, said that one of the biggest difficulties in the teaching process is that students often forget because, most of them have never been exposed to computers. In addition, most of the students at the Centre have physical and intellectual disabilities, so the acquisition of knowledge is sometimes limited.
“In order for students to be able to perform operations on the computer like now, in each lesson we always instruct carefully, use gentle words, frequently review knowledge, and at the same time create a fun and comfortable learning atmosphere so that they do not feel self-conscious during the learning process," Mr. Tich said.
In addition to computing knowledge, volunteers are involved in teaching literacy for illiterate students at the centre |
As a student proficient in basic computer skills, volunteer Trinh Dam Minh Quan, the first-year student in Computer Engineering Technology, expressed that guiding students at the free class helped him open his heart more to everyone, as well as know how to express himself in a simple and easy-to-understand manner so that students can easily absorb knowledge.
“Students are very eager to learn and listen hard. Hopefully, this activity will be the first step for them to learn about computers, serving many different purposes" Quan shared.
Meanwhile, volunteer Duong Thi Tinh, the first year student in Logistics, said that she was very happy to be able to contribute a little effort to help the Centre’s students to have access to IT.
“Through this activity, we hope to help students be equipped with basic IT knowledge, an important skill in the digital age. At the same time, it demonstrates the responsibility and enthusiasm of young people in community activities. In the coming time, the Youth Union organisation will continue to spread other meaningful works," Mr. Tich emphasised.
