Winning the second prize at the Loa Thanh Award 2024, the graduation project of Ton That Lap and Truong Huu Phuoc, both from the Faculty of Construction, School of Technology and Engineering, the Duy Tan University, has brought a solution for structural design and construction of a large-scale "Hospital - luxury apartment - education complex". The project features many complex items including a hospital, luxury apartment buildings, offices and classrooms.

Phuoc and Lap apply specialised knowledge to handle structural and construction solutions and well met the requirements of practice. The project proposes feasible construction methods to save costs and time. Accordingly, the students use modern software such as Revit, Autocad, Etabs, Safe, Adapt and Plaxis 2D for modeling, analysis and calculation to ensure scientific and aesthetic qualities, meeting the practical requirements of the project. In particular, they integrate building information modeling (BIM) into the project, an advanced direction in digital transformation, meeting the innovation requirements of the current construction industry.

Lap stated that the group's project brought values of utilities as well as functions associated with daily life.

“The competition provides the good opportunity for students to learn new things, and improve their professional knowledge and social reality as well. Personally, I learn more about the endless creativity of students from universities across the country. To be able to compete in major competitions, students need to practice perseverance and not give up in the face of difficulties. In addition, I have a chance to cultivate my skills and use the necessary software well for learning and practicing", Lap shared.

Another group consisting of Nguyen Duc Thien and Nguyen Minh Tu, both from Faculty of Construction Engineering, the University of Technical Education - the University of Da Nang, have grabbed the second prize at the Loa Thanh Award 2024 in the field of traffic – infrastructure for their project "Design to upgrade and renovate Hoa Xuan Bridge Intersection in Da Nang". The project has been highly appreciated by the award council for its creativity, uniqueness, practicality and scientific presentation.

The project points out the current traffic congestion situation at the Hoa Xuan Bridge Intersection, as well as collects survey data on terrain and traffic flow at the intersection, thereby proposing 4 preliminary options for upgrading and renovating the intersection.

According to Thien, his group’s project is close to reality, offers solutions to solve conflicts at the intersection, and increases the capacity of roads leading into the intersection. It features some 3D visualizations simulating the traffic flows during rush hour.

He added that the competition served as a platform for students to understand more about construction-related industries such as architecture, civil and industrial. This was a step forward for students to be able to work and contribute to the construction industry in general after graduation.

Having instructed many generations of students to implement projects for major specialized competitions such as Loa Thanh for several years, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phan Cao Tho, Chairman of the Science and Training Council, the University of Technical Education, emphasised that a quality project needed to have a certain level of feasibility, scientific content, and research content. He also highlighted the role of the instructor in guiding and encouraging students to confidently implement creative ideas, and applying knowledge learned from the classroom to real life.

Mr Tho noted that from the basic scientific foundation of the major, students will research solutions to solve real-life problems. The generation of students in recent years has had good thinking, quick access to digital technology, and good application of information technology. The important thing is to stimulate students' passion and love for scientific research so that they can see the effectiveness of scientific research activities in school days.

Initiated by the Viet Nam Construction Association (currently knowns as the Viet Nam Federation of Civil Engineering Associations), the Loa Thanh Award was first held in 1988. The event aims to honour outstanding graduation projects of students in the fields of construction and architecture. Later, the scale of the award was expanded. The 36th edition of the Loa Thanh Award in 2024 had 193 projects from 22 universities training in construction, architecture, construction engineering technology, transportation, and irrigation nationwide. In late 2024, the Award Council awarded 2 first, 18 second, 24 third, and 22 consolation prizes.
