Following recent approval by the Da Nang Party Committee, Red-Shanked Douc Langurs on the Son Tra Peninsula will become the city’s symbol to mark the 25th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit which will take place in the locality in October 2017.

This type of animal boasts 5 impressive colours, and it has been recognised by the Wildlife at Risk international organisation as ‘Queen’ of the primate species thanks to its unique beauty.  It belongs to Group IIB which are rare animals restricted from being held in captivity, hunted, traded or killed.

The Son Tra Peninsula is now home to around 530 red-shanked douc langurs, which accounts for 83% of the world’s total primate species.

Here are some photos, selected from the ‘Queen of the primate species’ photo collection, which showcase the unique beauty of this rare animal on the Peninsula.  The photos were taken by Hai Son, a freelance photographer for Da Nang Today.
