Between July and November, the Da Nang Red Cross Society is planning to give multifunctional life jackets to 1,000 fishermen in difficult circumstances across the city, aimed at helping them reduce occupational hazards at sea, especially during the upcoming rainy and stormy seasons.

According to the Da Nang Red Cross Society, this life jacket allows the wearer to float higher in the water after falling into the sea or floodwaters while waiting for rescue forces to arrive.

Le Tin, a fisherman from Son Tra District’s Nai Hien Dong Ward, underlined the importance of a life jacket in helping him and other fishermen to stay afloat and prevent drowning.

Meanwhile, fisherman Huynh Van Bop also from Nai Hien Dong Ward expressed his thanks to the authorities and Red Cross Society chapters at grass roots level for their special care and active support for fishermen. “The gift is small but shows affection and care from the government and social organisations for us. Wearing this life jacket makes us feel safer and more secure when going fishing at sea” added Bop.

From July until now, hundreds of multi-function life jackets have gone to fishermen citywide.

Phan Thanh Hai, Head of the Movement Board from the municipal Red Cross Society, said that the donation of life jackets to fishermen would continue after the interruption due to the impact of COVID-19. At the donation points, recipients would be directly guided by staff of the Red Cross Society on how to use them.

This activity is part of a Viet Nam Red Cross Society-launched programme to give life jackets to difficult offshore fishermen in 11 coastal cities and provinces from Nghe An to Khanh Hoa.

Designed by Mr. Vo Van Hoang Minh - a citizen dedicated to community activities, the multifunctional life jacket has been evaluated and tested by the Da Nang Center for Standards, Measurement and Quality 3 and Ho Chi Minh City's Sub-Department for Measurement and Quality, and received positive comments from fishermen and navy soldiers after many trials.

This is a meaningful and humanitarian gift for fishermen, significantly contributing to ensuring their safety when fishing offshore, as well as encouraging them to continue maintaining their legal fishing activities in order to protecting the national sovereignty over its sea and islands.
