The Deo Ca Transport Infrastructure Investment JSC, along with police and firefighting forces from Da Nang and Thua Thien-Hue Province, carried out a firefighting and emergency rescue drill inside the Hai Van Tunnel on Tuesday afternoon.

The technical room is equipped with modern equipment.

In the hypothetical situation, at around 3:00 pm on Tuesday, a 9-tonne diesel truck had its front tire blown out unexpectedly inside the tunnel and spun out of control before hitting the tunnel wall. As a consequence, oil tanks on the truck were broken and fuel inside oil tanks were spilled out, causing a fire that spread to other vehicles travelling inside the tunnel.

The incident occurred as the truck was travelling to the distance Km 5+555 inside the Hai Van 2 Tunnel in the firefighting area No. 3, about 3,912m from the northern tunnel entrance, and 2,380km from the southern tunnel entrance to the administrative boundary of Da Nang.

At this time, 35 vehicles, with an estimate of 60 people, were travelling inside the road tunnel.

The traffic accident disrupted traffic and caused long queues of vehicles. Many passengers were injured and fainted from the smoke.

Staff from the tunnel’s management centre detected the incident through their surveillance cameras and traffic sensor systems.

Fire engines and dozens of firefighters from Da Nang and Thua Thien-Hue Province were quickly sent to the scene.

Meanwhile, nurses and rescue workers gave first aid to injured and fainted victims and then rushed them to the Lang Co Medical Station in Phu Loc District, Thua Thien Hue Province.

Thanks to the great efforts of firefighters, the blaze was completely extinguished within 15 minutes, whilst traffic was successfully regulated to ensure the smooth circulation of vehicles.

As noted, the drill took place professionally and smoothly, helping enhance the coordination between functional forces in case of incidents.

The drill proves that relevant forces' readiness to ensure safety of people and the smooth circulation of vehicles if there are any fire incidents inside the Hai Van Tunnel.

Firefighters were equipped with personal protective equipment while carrying out the fire operation.

When there is an announcement of an incident inside the Hai Van tunnel, the functional forces will set up barriers and stop vehicles moving into the tunnel.

Representatives of functional forces of Da Nang and Thua Thien - Hue Province were present at the drill.
