In recent days, farmers of the La Huong Safe Vegetable Production Cooperative in Hoa Tho Dong Ward, Cam Le District, Da Nang, have been ramping up their production in order to serve their customers over the upcoming Tet Festival which falls on January 21.

According to Mr. Tran Van Hoang, Director of the La Huong Safe Vegetable Production Cooperative, the unusually cold and prolonged rain from the end of last year caused damage to vegetables, tubers and fruits in the gardens of the cooperative. Productivity is therefore reduced. Only one quintal of vegetables per day are provided for customers while the figure recorded in the same period last year was one ton of vegetables per day.

As noted, the current prices of vegetables in the garden have almost doubled, ranging from VND20,000 - VND30,000/kg. Specifically, cabbage is being sold at the price of VND15,000 - VND20,000/kg, melons VND15,000 - VND25,000/kg, and bitter melons VND30,000/kg.

When watering the vegetable beds, farmer Mai Van Toan residing in Hoa Tho Dong Ward, Cam Le District, said this year's Tet crop is also relatively diverse with water spinach, lettuce, cabbage, cilantro and collard greens.

According to Mr. Toan, his family’s two plots of cauliflowers were damaged by the heavy rains in October 2022. To ensure the supply of vegetables and tubers for the Tet market, he and other farmers in the La Huong Cooperative grew short-term vegetables to compensate for the loss. This was the advantage of a clean vegetable area in accordance with VietGap standards like La Huong because clean and fresh vegetables are always favored by the market. Consumption is therefore still guaranteed.

This year’s vegetable prices are higher than the previous year’s due to a hike in the input costs, including fertilizers. However, the profit will not be as much as every year because many planted areas were damaged during the city’s historical downpours last year, Mr. Toan added.

After the prolonged rain, La Huong farmers urgently plant and cultivate short-term vegetables to ensure the adequate supply for the Tet market.

According to many farmers, this year's vegetable prices are higher than every year's due to higher input costs such as ash and fertilizers.

The Tet vegetable crop in La Huong is well priced, but the profit is mainly to compensate for the damages caused by natural disasters at the end of last year.

After a difficult year due to natural disasters, La Huong farmers expect a prosperous new lunar year with good crops.
