The Tra Que vegetable village has recently recognised as the "World’s Best Tourist Village" by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) thanks to its outstanding criteria on natural resources and culture, plus innovative tourism activities in line with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Located 3km northeast of Hoi An ancient town and more than 20km south of Da Nang, Tra Que vegetable village dates back to the 16th century. |
The Tra Que vegetable village is bordered by the Co Co River and Tra Que Lagoon. Its river-island location near the sea provides a temperate climate and fertile soil. |
Favourable natural conditions make it ideal for organic vegetable farming. |
Tra Que is home to 202 families with 326 direct workers who cultivate on an 18-hectare area. |
Tra Que vegetable brand is well known by domestic and foreign tourists, becoming a typical part of Hoi An and Quang Nam cuisine. |
In April 2022, the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism recognized Tra Que’s vegetable farming as a national intangible cultural heritage, categorized under traditional knowledge and craft. |
Tra Que villagers have cared for vegetable beds through many generations. |
With the orientation of developing green and sustainable tourism in Hoi An, Tra Que vegetable village promotes the community-based tourism village model with many unique activities such as "a day as a Tra Que farmer", "cooking lessons and culinary enjoyment", and homestay accommodation services. |
The village also has historical relics such as Cham stone well, Tho Than (Earth God) Temple, Ngu Hanh Temple, Nguyen Van Dien's tomb, Cau Bong worship custom, along with customs, beliefs, and culinary culture that have been preserved for generations. |
Hoi An City has issued many policies to support the economy, society and tourism development in Tra Que vegetable village, thereby creating conditions for farmers to reproduce; promoting the development of community-based tourism; and advertising the image of craft village tourism as well as Tra Que vegetable products. |
