Reducing poverty in Da Nang by providing practical support for the poor

The Da Nang Fatherland Front Committees at all levels have taken specific and practical actions in a bid to take better care of the poor and ensure better social protection for them. The focus has been on building new houses for the poor, thereby helping them have stable and safe housing, and feel secure to develop their family economy in order to escape poverty.

Recently, Mr. Ho Ray's family living in An Hai Bac Ward, Son Tra District, moved to a new spacious house. His family is very poor and they used to live in a small dilapidated house with cracked walls, rotted roof and low floor, so their house was flooded after heavy rain.

VND 50 million from the Fund "For the Poor" of the Da Nang Fatherland Front Committee, and an additional VND 10 million from the An Hai Bac Ward Chapter went to support the construction of house for Mr. Ray’s family.

“New house brings unexpected joy to my family. From now on, I no longer have to worry about housing. I just focus on earning money to support my family and taking good care of my family members," Mr. Ray said.

Mr Le Ba Cong, the Chairman of An Hai Bac Ward Chapter of the Da Nang Fatherland Front Committee said that so far this year, the ward has used its allocated funds to build 1 new house and repair 17 degraded houses for poor households. Besides, 18 other households were helped with livelihoods support worth VND 65 million in total, 21 another ones with financial assistance totaling 48 million, 17 others with medical check-ups and treatment totaling VND 32 million, poor pupils with 12 bicycles worth VND 24 million, and more.

Most recently, Hoa Vang District’s Hoa Nhon Commune has built a new house for Mr. Huynh Phuong's family in Hoa Khuong Dong Village. The construction cost of his house was financed by cash donations worth 60 million VND from the Association of Da Nang Compatriots in Ho Chi Minh City.

Mr. Phuong’s family is living in extreme poverty. Mr Phuong is a disabled man with one leg, and he makes a living selling lottery tickets. His wife is a manual worker so that her income is unstable while they have to take care of their school-age children, and their house was badly degraded.

Mr Nguyen Dinh Thu, the Chairman of Hoa Nhon Commune Chapter of the Da Nang Fatherland Front Committee said that the commune plans to build one new house and repair four degraded houses for the poor within this year with the funding from the Da Nang Fatherland Front Committee and donations. Currently, the commune is active in calling for donations for its Fund "For the Poor" in efforts to provide livelihoods support for disadvantaged people, and grant scholarships to poor students so that they can get out of poverty, and are ready to enter their new 2023 – 2024 school, respectively.

Mr Bui Nam Dung, the Chairman of the Hoa Vang District Chapter remarked that the district will spend VND nearly 1.9 billion on building 13 new houses and repair 50 others for poor households in 2023.

Overall, VND 1.95 billion from the Da Nang Fund "For the Poor" will go to support the construction of 39 new houses for the poor across the city within this year.
