According to the latest statistics released by Da Nang’s Police Department, between November 2012 and August 2013, a total of 126 road traffic accidents were recorded in the city, involving 98 deaths and 78 serious injuries.  Property damage from these traffic accidents amounted to over 900 million VND.

In particular, speeding was thought to be a major cause in 21 motorcycle crashes which claimed 20 lives.  An additional 20 crashes, resulting in over 10 deaths, did not involve any other vehicle.  The majority of traffic accident victims were young people.

In an attempt to reduce the number of road traffic accidents, local relevant agencies have introduced numerous measures to widely publicise the effects of speeding.  They include penalties for speeding, prohibiting reckless overtaking, strictly punishing drink-drivers and those who weave between moving vehicles or zigzag through traffic, and confiscating vehicles involved in illegal motorbike racing.  However, many road traffic accidents still occur in the city, and they have painful consequences.

Traffic accidents caused by speeding often occur in the evening, especially after 9pm.  The city’s police said that it is very difficult for them to handle this violation because it is very dangerous for the police officers on duty.  Since the start of the year, the local police have dealt with around 4,500 speeding offenders.
