The Da Nang Steering Committee for Crime Prevention and Control has awarded 1 million VND to Nguyen Hai Long as a reward for his bravery.  As previously reported here, 22-year-old Long, a student at the College of Technology, successfully caught an armed robber on Tran Cao Van Street on 14 October.

At 5pm on that day, Long heard someone shouting for help.  He then saw a youngster running away from the post office at 268 Tran Cao Van Street.  He chased after the robber and, with the assistance of local residents, he caught the offender and handed him over to the police.

The robber was 17-year-old Nguyen Anh Son who lives on Truong Chinh Street.  Son said that he had gone to the post office to buy a top-up card for his phone.  He confessed that he had caught the owner, Ms Truong Thi Kieu Hanh, off guard, snatched her iPhone from her hand, beaten her repeatedly about the head with a hammer, and left her unconscious.

Son has now been prosecuted by the city’s Police Department for “appropriating property”.
