The 8th meeting of the Viet Nam-USA Joint Advisory Committee (JAC) on Agent Orange (AO) is taking place in Da Nang on 4 and 5 December.

The participants are hearing about the process of implementating the “Removal of Dioxin Contamination at the Da Nang International Airport” project from the Vietnamese Ministry of Defence and the US Agency for International Development.

The project started in 2012 and is expected to be completed in 2016.  So far this year, 43,000m3 of dioxin-contaminated soil has been excavated.  It will be burned at a temperature of 3350 C in the coming months.

At present, the project is on track to remove all dioxin-contaminated soil and sediment at the airport by late 2016.  This will help to reduce the risk of local residents living around this dioxin hotspot being exposed to the dangerous chemical.
