Design contest educates pupils about the country's sovereignty
A recent design contest entitled “Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) Archipelagos in Our Hearts” has attracted the participation of members from Ho Chi Minh Young Pioneer Organisations in 26 primary and secondary schools in Da Nang. The contest was part of a series of activities to welcome in the city’s Summer Festival for Children 2014.
In the contest, each competing team was required to form an S-shaped model of a map of Viet Nam, including the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos, within 2 hours 30 minutes. The model was to be made of available materials including paper, fabric, crayons, cans and foam sheets. It had to feature replicas of hills, mountains, sea, islands and fleets of offshore fishing vessels heading out to sea. In particular, special attention was to be paid to placing representations of the two archipelagos in their correct positions on the map of Viet Nam. Also available were sovereignty markers and images of Vietnamese naval soldiers holding guns to safeguard the country’s sovereignty. Meaningful slogans were provided, including “We Love Peace”, “Beloved Truong Sa and Hoang Sa Islands” and “Today Peace” symbols.

The Deputy Secretary of the municipal Youth Union Organisation, Mr Doan Xuan Hieu, said that the contest had helped the younger generations to understand about Viet Nam’s sovereignty over the 2 archipelagos. This will strengthen their ardent patriotism as well as raise awareness among members of the Youth Union and Ho Chi Minh Young Pioneer Organisations of the need to protect the country’s sacred sovereignty over its sea and islands. The municipal Youth Union has focused on publicisingViet Nam’s Law on the Sea and its legitimate sovereignty over its sea and islands to local young people attending local festivals and social activities.
