On Sunday afternoon, 3 injured fishermen and the body of another from fishing boat QNa 92647 TS from Quang Nam Province’s Hoi An City were brought back to the mainland.

Earlier that day the fishing boat, owned by 52-year-old Huynh Nung from Hoi An City and with 10 crew members on board, had been rammed by an unidentified cargo ship whilst fishing at latitude 16°35’N and longitude 108°19’E.  This had damaged the left side of the boat, and it had begun to take in water.  In addition, 4 fishermen on board were injured and had fainted, including Mr Le Thanh Ba who was in a critical situation.

After receiving an SOS message from the boat, the Da Nang Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (Da Nang MRCC) sent out rescue ship SAR 274, carrying 2 doctors from the city’s Emergency Centre, to help the distressed fishermen.

Around noon on the same day, SAR 274 reached the boat and the patients were transferred to the rescue ship for initial first aid, but Mr Ba eventually died due to his severe injuries.  His body and the 3 victims were brought back to the mainland.

The body of Mr Ba was then handed over to the local authorities and his family.
