Successful surgical removal of 4.3kg tumour

Surgeons from the Da Nang Cancer Hospital have successfully performed an operation to remove a 4.3kg, 24cm x 27cm tumour from 59-year-old Nguyen Thi Bai from Quang Ngai Province.
Mrs Bai had been admitted to the hospital because her belly was bigger than normal, looking very much as if she was 4 months pregnant.
With the help of a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan, the doctors detected a leiomyoma which is a benign smooth muscle neoplasm that very rarely becomes cancerous. The tumour was invading and embedding into the patient’s pelvis.

It took 2.5 hours to make incisions into the patient’s uterus and ovaries to remove the huge tumour.
Mrs Bai has now been discharged from the hospital.
