Da Nang was scheduled to treat local residents and visitors to spectacular fireworks display on 1 January to mark 20 years since the city’s recognition as a centrally-governed city on 1 January 1997.

However, the show has been cancelled following recent instructions from the Party National Committee's Secretariat, and the Da Nang Party Committee.  All localities nationwide have been asked to not set off fireworks so that their budgets can be utilised to help their local poor.
