The 25,000 USD programme will be funded by The Reuse Everything Institute Inc (REII) which is a non-profit organisation dedicated to discovering and re-discovering ways of using knowledge and resources for better ecological management of human activity on our shared planet.
The recipient of the funds is the municipal Union of Science and Technology Association. The Nuoc Viet Xanh (GreenViet) Biodiversity Conservation Centre will be responsible for implementing the programme.
The focus of the programme will be to conduct research into the estimated numbers, density and distribution of the red-shanked douc langurs, creating a map of the distribution of the plant species which are important food sources for this type of rare primate, and learning more about the phenological characteristics of the area.
A total of 400 pupils from 4 local junior high schools will attend a course on the biodiversity of the peninsula, and some of them will join in extra-curricular activities in the Son Tra Nature Reserve.
40 senior city authority officials will participate in field trips to the peninsula to learn about the biodiversity protection in the nature reserve.
In addition, 350 local students will pay visits to the peninsula each Sunday. These participants will be chosen after an Internet interview via the official website of GreenViet at http://greenviet.org/.
A seminar will take place on 22 May to mark World Biodiversity Day. This event will focus on discussing more effective measures to protect the biodiversity of the peninsula in a sustainable manner.
