The system is to be located in Hoa Vang and Lien Chieu districts, benefiting people who live in Hoa Lien Commune. It will extend along Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, road No 602 and the Hoa Trung Reservoir.
The project begun in March 2015 but it was, then, delayed due to slow land clearance and site preparation.
According to the Trung Nam Joint Stock Company, the project's contractor, a 83m bridge and approach road system along the channel was put into operation last year, while 70% of the 5.9km channel construction has been already completed. The remainder will be completed later this year.
The city’s northwest area, including Lien Chieu and Hoa Vang districts, is seen as a vulnerable site to flood and storm season between November and December. The population of 50,000 suffers from floods and landslides annually.
The flood discharge channel project was built at a cost of 114 billion VND (more than 5 million USD). It plays a key role in protecting this area – the lowest in the city – from serious damage due to floods.
In 2013, the city suffered a loss of 33 million USD when the storm Nari damaged more than 1,100 houses.
