At 11.10am on Saturday, 43-year-old fisherman Mai Van Hoang was reported to suffer from acute appendicitis whilst his vessel was fishing at latitude 17°28’N and longitude 110°20’E, northwest of the Hoang Sa Archipelago, about 140 nautical miles northeast off the Da Nang coast.
After receiving an SOS message from the boat’s captain, the Viet Nam Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (Viet Nam MRCC) immediately helped the boat’s crew members to contact doctors from the Marine Medicine Institute to ask for first aid instructions.
Besides, the Viet Nam MRCC asked the Da Nang MRCC to send out its rescue ship SAR 412, carrying doctors from the city’s Emergency Centre 115, to help the victim.
At 9.00pm on Saturday, SAR 412 reached the fishing boat, and the patient was, then, transferred to the rescue ship for first aid. Thanks to this, the sick fisherman was out of critical condition.
At 4.00am on Sunday, the victim was safely brought back to the mainland for further treatment at a local hospital.
