The shelter is now home to a total of 47 school pupils, and university and junior college students who all have been in difficult circumstances, and 13 of them are kids.

The majority of the disadvantaged come from Da Nang, and neighbouring Quang Nam Province.

Two siblings, aged 13 and 12 respectively, from Da Nang’s Hoa Vang District, are a typical example. They have recently been admitted to the charity shelter for being cared for.

A few years ago, the 2 little girls’ family broke apart after their parents’ unexpected divorce. Still worse, their mother rebounded and eventually remarried, whist their father deserted his school-aged daughters, thereby living them facing countless difficulties in life. Afterwards, the siblings lived with their maternal grandfather in Quang Nam Province’s Dien Ban District.

The shelter’s operating cost is being funded by the Giving it Back to Kids (GIBTK), which is a US non-profit organisation dedicated to helping kids achieve their maximum potential through giving medical care, education, nutrition and love to them.

At this venue, the children actively engage in literacy learning and life skills.  Primary school pupils here are always taken to their schools by the shelter’s staff members.

Meanwhile, junior and senior high school ones travel to school by bike, and they also attend many extra courses free-of-charge on Maths, Physics, Chemistry, English and Computer Skills at the shelter. Those who gain outstanding academic results at school are eligible for gifts from GIBTK.

Apart from accessing free courses on some major subjects, these disadvantaged children also join in life skill and swimming classes, along with exciting extracurricular activities, and enjoy sightseeing trips around the city.

Notably, over recent years, many of the children who have grown up at this shelter have been enrolled at some of local universities and junior colleges, and then found stable jobs after their graduation. Despite their busy work schedule, they usually visit the shelter where they were cared for in the loving arms of the community.

24-year-old Luong Duy Thai Nguyen, for instance, was brought up in a poor family in Son Tra District’s Tho Quang Ward. Nguyen recalled his family’s unforgettable hardships during his childhood. His family was dealt a devastating blow many years ago when his parents suddenly passed away, thereby living him facing countless difficulties in life.

Fortunately, Nguyen was taken to the shelter for care, and he always considers the place as his home. Thanks to the great assistance from the shelter’s staff, Nguyen had an opportunity to continue pursuing his academic dream, and he then graduated from the city-based Duc Tri Junior College.

Encouragingly, the young man has been enrolled into the city’s University of Physical Education and Sports where he continues nurturing his strong passion for Vietnamese martial arts Vovinam.

In a similar vein, young man Tran Thanh Quy was once cared for and educated at the shelter when he was an orphan. The man now has a stable job as a white-collar worker at a company in Da Nang’s Hai Chau District, with a monthly income of nearly 7 million VND.

The Director of the shelter, Mr Dang Huu Bao, said that he and his staff members have always made every effort in making the venue a fairy home filled with great love for disadvantaged children. The intention is to help them overcome their inferiority complex about their unfortunate fates, and confidently re-integrate into the community with their better lives and brighter future.

Those who were once cared for at the shelter have always showed his deep gratitude to the venue’s staff for taking the trouble to wholeheartedly care for them without any complaints.
