The 5th Open Viet Nam-France Conference on Bone Marrow and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation took place in Da Nang on 17 and 18 August.

The event was jointly organised by the Ho Chi Minh City Haematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital, the Grenoble University Hospital Centre (Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Grenoble) and the French Blood Transfusion Centre.

Attending the event were as many as 500 leading professors, doctorate holders and doctors from hospitals nationwide, along with 30 specialists in haematopoietic stem cell transplantation from such foreign countries as France, Belgium, the USA, Japan, Taiwan, China, Singapore and Canada.

The 2-day event featured discussions about the treatment of hematologic diseases with haematopoietic stem cell transplantation, common complications of the transplantation, patients’ lives after transplantation, and the transfusion of red cells in the transplantation.

Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation is a potentially curative treatment option in various benign and malignant haematological diseases.

Since 1995, the first haematopoietic stem cell transplant has been performed successfully at the Ho Chi Minh City Haematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital. To date, there are a total of 9 centres performing haematopoietic stem cell transplantation nationwide.
