Running at the New Hawaii coffee shop, 15 Tran Quy Cap, Da Nang’s Hai Chau District on the first Saturday morning of each month, the programme aims to appeal for generous philanthropists to help those in need, including reporters in difficult circumstances.
The first recipient was 7-year-old Phan Thi Thao Nhi from Da Nang’s Lien Chieu District who is suffering from myeloid leukemia.
The girl is now undergoing periodic chemotherapy sessions at the city’s Paediatric and Maternity Hospital pending a future marrow transplant which must be performed as soon as possible to save her life.
The second one was 2-year-old Pham Hoang Gia Nhi temporarily residing in Ngu Hanh Son District’s Hoa Hai Ward. Nhi has suffered brain developmental delays since birth.
The third was Mai Tinh, a male veteran living in a block of adjacent houses for the poor in Hoa Ward Hai.
Joining Viet Nam’s resistance wars, Tinh was infected with Agent Orange (AO), and often gets sick. Still worse, his children have been suffering cerebral palsy and limb stiffness which are linked to AO exposure for decades. Tinh’s family members now live in a very difficult circumstance.
The last recipient was reporter Nguyen Hong, the Deputy Head of the Nhan Dan Newspaper’s Representative Office in Da Nang.
Diagnosed with end-stage renal disease, Hong is being the Da Nang General Hospital. It is reported that his family is now facing financial difficulties as he and his wife are seriously ill at the same time, requiring prolonged and expensive medical treatment.
