At around 5am on 4 January, the fishing boat BD 97692 TS, captained by Mr Ton Van Hung from Binh Dinh Province, suffered an engine failure whilst it was operating off coast of Quang Tri Province. This incident left the fishing boat adrift in rough seas, sea waves of 3m high, and strong winds of levels 6-7.

Fishermen onboard made a distress call to the Viet Nam Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (Viet Nam MRCC) for assistance.

After receiving an SOS message from the boat’s crewmembers, the Viet Nam MRCC asked SAR 412 rescue boat from the Da Nang MRCC to help the boat in distress.

At 10.45pm on the same day, SAR 412 reached the distressed boat, and all the crew members were transferred to the rescue ship for first aid.

On Tuesday morning, all crewmembers and their boat BD 97692 TS were towed back to the mainland safely.
