Da Nang joins EU-funded project on climate change mitigation and adaptation
A workshop combined with training sessions on climate change mitigation and adaptation with the participation of delegates from 14 Vietnamese cities is taking place on Thursday in Da Nang.
The event is being jointly held by the Association of Cities of Viet Nam, the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Viet Nam, the Project Secretariat supporting the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM), and the Da Nang Department of Natural Resources and the Environment.
Speaking at the workshop, Deputy Director of the Da Nang Department of Natural Resources and the Environment Vo Nguyen Chuong highly appreciated the GCoM deployment in the 2018 - 2020 period for helping the municipal administration develop and issue an action plan to respond with climate change in the 2021 - 2030 period, with a vision towards 2050.
Da Nang is honoured to continue to participate in the GCoM project in Asia. The project will help Da Nang, along with other cities in Viet Nam, implement concrete, long-term measures to address related challenges to boost climate change mitigation, adaptation and sustainable qenergy access.
The GCoM Asia project in the period 2021-2023, funded by the EU is implemented in in four Southeast Asian countries, namely Malaysia, Viet Nam, Indonesia, and Thailand.
The GCoM is the largest global alliance for city climate leadership. It includes cities, local governments, and partners committed to combating climate change. The GCoM is built upon the commitment of over 11,500 cities and local governments. These cities hail from 6 continents and 142 countries. In total, they represent more than 1 billion people.
Based on current targets and actions, GCoM cities and local governments could collectively reduce global emissions by 1.9 GtCO2e annually in 2030 compared to a business-as-usual (BAU) trajectory. In 2050, that figure is estimated to be 3.8 GtCO2e annually, comprising one-quarter of total urban emissions abatement potential. This is equivalent to more than half of all GHG emissions in the United States in 2019, or four years of CO2 emissions from global commercial aviation.
The cities and partners of GCoM share a long-term vision of supporting voluntary action to combat climate change.
