By visiting many places and collecting trash by yourselves, you can feel the love for the environment most clearly and see the need to join efforts to act more for a cleaner and more beautiful living environment.

Using eco-friendly reusable bags when going to wet markets is a message conveyed a group of Tran Phu Senior High School pupils.
Using eco-friendly reusable bags when going to wet markets is a message conveyed a group of Tran Phu Senior High School pupils.

Those are sharing words made by some of Da Nang’s pupils after joining a film making programme entitled ‘One Green Minute’.

Co-organised by the Da Nang Youth Union and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Viet Nam, the programme aims to raise awareness and responsibility about environmental protection and climate change adaption among young people.

“Water is the blood of life”

Through a 60-second-long video entitled "Water is the blood of life", Tran Ngoc Chau Giang and Vu Minh Huy, both 9th graders from the Son Tra District-based Le Do Secondary School, want to convey a message of environmental protection from the smallest actions.

As shared by Giang, a few years ago, people in her countryside in Tam Dan Commune, Phu Ninh District, Quang Nam Province, faced a shortage of clean water in summer season. Also, Giang saw a lot of plastic waster littered along Nguyen Tat Thanh Street and the Nam O.

Therefore, she decided to participate in the aforementioned video making contest in order to call on people to protect water sources.

“Normally, I often hear about environmental protection. When going to beaches to shoot a video and clean them by myself, I realise that it is necessary to call on many people to join hands to reduce the burden on the environment" said Giang.

Wherever Giang visits, she always shows her video for everyone to watch. In class, the homeroom teacher facilitates Giang and Huy to show their video and at the same time appeal for their friends to protect water sources.

"If everyone is aware of saving and protecting water sources near where they live, they will have clean water to use" noted Giang.

Young people need action

A group of 6 students in Grade 11/18 of the Tran Phu Senior High School have selected images of daily activities using plastic bags such as going to the market, buying soft drinks in plastic cups, etc. to spread the message to prevent littering of waste plastic and replace plastic items with environmentally friendly items.

Ho Yen Ni, the leader of the group, stressed the need for young people to take action to make the living environment cleaner and more developed.

“We should not live for immediate comfort, but think about the future” emphasized Ni.

Yen Ni added “In class, I and my friends hold a weekly quiz about the environment, and convinced my classmates or relatives to buy environmentally friendly items such as cloth bags and reusable water bottles from non-profit organisations for fundraising. At home, I also encourage my parents and grandparents to limit the use of plastic bags. On holidays, I often buy cloth bags as gifts for my relatives".

Tenth grader Huynh Thi Kim Anh from the Hoang Hoa Tham Senior High School and a group of her classmates have been active in putting garbage in right places and taking bus to school instead of using electric bicycles.

Nguyen Thi Anh Thao, Deputy Secretary of the Da Nang Youth Union, highlighted the meaningfulness of the "One Green Minute" programme in helping young people understand more about the environment and climate change, as well as giving them the opportunity to propose solutions about environmental protection and climate change adaption through making video clips and posting them on social networking platforms.

In addition, participants were trained in filming and video editing skills on mobile phones, as well as had the opportunity to directly exchange and learn experiences from video-making experts.
