Surgeons from the Da Nang Family Hospital have just used advanced technology to conduct operation on a 90-year-old local patient who fractured his femur after an unexpected ground-level fall.

The elderly patient from Lien Chieu District, Da Nang was rushed to the Da Nang Family Hospital after sustaining a ground-level fall onto her knees in a state of pain, swelling in many areas of the left hip joint and the complete loss of the motor function of her left leg.

Through examinations and performing paraclinical techniques, the doctors diagnosed the patient with a fracture of the left femur.

Orthopedic and trauma specialists later decided to conduct surgery onto her according to the treatment method of nailing the femoral bone marrow through the skin, combined with the use of a C-arm x-ray machine.

After the 45-minute surgery, the patient's left leg motor function has gradually recovered.

According to doctor Nguyen Dinh Hoa, Head of the Musculoskeletal Unit at the Da Nang Family Hospital, the technique of intra-femoral nailing combined with the use of a C-arm x-ray machine has many outstanding advantages such as a small incision helping the bone significantly recover, high surgical accuracy, no blood loss and much shorter surgery time.

“If the surgery was had not conducted on the patient, she would have bedridden for many months, which can lead to more severe complications such as pneumonia, urinary tract infection, pressure ulcers, and even death”, said doctor Hoa.

Doctors said that femur fractures occur in the elderly, even those aged over 90 -100, with proper treatment, patients can still restore their health and physical mobility as before the fracture.
