Ma-on downgraded to a remnant low, bringing heavy rainfall to many places of the country

Viet Nam’s National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF) issued the final advisory for Ma-on early Friday.

After making landfall on Thursday as a powerful typhoon over western Guangdong Province, China, storm Ma-on rapidly weakened into a depression, and is now just a remnant low-pressure system over the northern mountainous region of Viet Nam, according to the national weather service.

Forecasters said at 1:00 am Friday, what’s left of Ma-on was located near latitude 21°8'N and longitude 106°3'E. The maximum sustainable winds at the center of the remnant low-pressure system will decrease below level 6 (below 39km per hour).

In the next 12 hours, forecast models indicate that the remnants of storm Ma-on will continue to track toward the west and then gradually dissipate.

Heavy to extremely heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms with strong winds will hit Northern Viet Nam under the influence of Ma-on’s remnants. The total rainfall amount will be 50mm to 100mm in common in the region while more than 150mm of rain could fall in some places. As much as 30mm-60mm of rain could fall over Thanh Hoa, and even more than 80mm at isolated locations.

Due the influence of the southwest monsoon, the best chance for showers and thunderstorms at most places during the daytime and night hours with heavy rainfall and thunder during the afternoon and evening hours at isolated places on Friday will be in South Central Coast, Central Highlands and the Southern region. The total rainfall amount will be 10mm to 30mm in common in these areas while more than 50mm of rain could fall in some places.

The NCHMF said that there is likely to be a decrease in rainfall activity over these areas from Saturday, August 27.

Forecasters have also issued warnings of flash floods and landslides for mountainous areas, and localized flooding alerts are in place in low-lying and riverside areas over Quang Ninh, Thai Nguyen, Lang Son, and Bac Giang.

Warning for level 1 natural hazard risk, including heavy rain, tornadoes, lightning has been also issued for these areas.

Sunshine is forecast on Friday for most parts from Da Nang to Binh Thuan with the chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms during late afternoon hours over these areas while few places could receive showers with thunder during night hours. Temperatures in these areas can expect lows of 25 to 28 degrees Celsius and highs of 31 to 34 degrees Celsius, even above 35 degrees Celsius in some places.

There are weather warnings for strong gusty winds and tornadoes, lightning during a thunderstorm for these areas.
