Planting of trees promises new highlight on Son Tra Peninsula
At the beginning of August, 2022, the Da Nang People's Committee issued a plan for planting trees on the Son Tra Peninsula in a bid to create a unique highlight for this highly popular site, and Da Nang as a whole, in tandem with effectively implementing the ‘Growing 1 billion trees in the 2021 - 2025 period’ project in the city.

As proposed by the competent authorities, focus will be on alternately planting 2 main indigenous tree varieties on the peninsula, namely Lagerstroemia speciosa and Millettia nigrescens Gagnep trees, along with a large number of fruit trees such as milkweed, jackfruit and longan in order to create ecological diversity here and a source of food for animals in the future.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Chung, a resident living in Man Thai Ward, Son Tra District said that the city's planting of the two above-mentioned flowering trees will help beautify the Son Tra Peninsula. When the trees enter in the blooming season, they will promise a very impressive and attractive scenery setting on the peninsula.
Meanwhile, Mr. Dinh Van Loc, the CEO of Viet Da Travel said that Da Nang is known by many domestic and international tourists as a city of tourism and events.
The fact that the city has its own flower colour not only contributes to beautifying the landscape and attracting tourists but it also create a new ‘tourist brand’ like other provinces and cities.
“The tours of our unit all have programmes to bring visitors to the Son Tra Peninsula. Going through the streets imbued with Da Nang's own identity and brand will make visitors more impressed and excited”, shared Mr. Dinh Van Loc.
According to Mr. Phan Minh Hai, Deputy Director of the Management Board of Son Tra Peninsula and Da Nang tourist beaches, Lagerstroemia speciosa and Millettia nigrescens Gagnep trees are two types of plants that are suitable for the climate and soil of the peninsula. Planting flowering trees on the peninsula will help attract urban dwellers and tourists to take picnic trips and check-in.
Besides, according to the plan, some fruit tree species will be planted in order to create ecological diversity here and supplement food sources for wildlife species living on the peninsula.
“In addition to the aforementioned two types of trees, the city needs to consider planting additional plants at tourist rest-stops with a variety of flowers, such as such as milkweed, jackfruit and longan,” suggested Mr. Hai.
According to the Da Nang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the planting of trees on the peninsula will be carried out according to the roadmap from 2022 to 2025 along 3 routes with a total length of 13,146km.
In detail, 5.6km-long Route 1 stretches from the Tien Sa Port to the top of ‘Ban Co’ (Chessboard Peak), 2km-long Route 2 from the radar station to a watch-tower and 5.4 km long Route 3 from the Ho Xanh (Green Lake) area to Bai Bac tourist site.
Particularly, at the foot of the Ban Co peak, it is recommended to plant trees on an area of 0.1ha.
Trees will be planted alternately, 5m apart, and they must reach a height of 2m, be able to grow and develop well, as well as withstand landslides and strong wind.
Planting of trees to kick-start in September, 2022 According to Mr. Phan The Dung, Head of the Da Nang Forest Protection Department, it is expected that in September 2022, the unit will start planting trees, ensuring techniques to protect trees in the rainy season. Planting trees in the rainy season on the peninsula will be favourable, because in the hot season, the climate here is especially dry and hot as compared to other areas in the city. |
