Spurring plastic waste recycling market in Son Tra District

The Son Tra District People's Committee and the global development oirganization iDE on Thursday jointly implemented the project of building a sustainable circular economy for plastic waste in the wards of Nai Hien Dong, Man Thai, Tho Quang, Phuoc My and An Hai Bac in order to collect, recycle, reuse, process and consume about 2,000 tonnes of plastic waste and minimise waste drifting into the ocean.

Accordingly, the project will support 100% of scrap collectors in the 5 wards to participate in the plastic waste value chain. In particular, all workers at these waste collection establishments will receive support to improve working conditions and increase income thanks to promoting the market for collecting and recycling plastic waste.

The project also supports to promote the movement of waste separation at source to achieve the goal of 40% of the households, and 40% of the businesses participating in waste classification.

At the project implementation session, Son Tra District also proposed iDE to support the Son Tra Environmental Enterprise for workers to collect more types of plastic waste, especially those that contain low-value plastic waste.

Also, assistance will be made to support scrap collectors to purchase hard plastics; assist districts and wards to organise environmental protection activities, ass well as promote waste sorting at source and movement against plastic waste.
