A scientific seminar themed ‘Joining hands to protect water sources in Cu De River basin’ took place in Da Nang on Tuesday.

Co-organised by the municipal Department of Natural Resources and Environment and Hoa Vang District People’s Committee, the event aimed to respond to the World Water Day (March 22).

During the seminar, Secretary of the Hoa Vang District Party Committee To Van Hung highlighted the importance of the Cu De River in ensuring adequate water sources for the full operation of the soon-to-be-operated Hoa Lien Water Supply Plant, and guaranteeing the city's water security.

According to Deputy Director of the municipal Department of Natural Resources and Environment Nguyen Quang Vinh, protecting water resources is the responsibility of all agencies, organisations and individuals. He stressed the need to take prevention as the main action associated with the protection and development of forests, and the ability to regenerate water resources.

He remarked protecting the Cu De River and internal rivers was a regular, long-term and extremely urgent task.

During the event, participants suggested some specific solutions and actions to protect the water source of Cu De River and the water reserve of Da Nang. Included are protecting watershed forests, watershed basin of Cu De River, invest in a system of collecting and treating wastewater generated in residential areas along the river, and continuing to implement replacement afforestation projects in sub-zones in Hoa Bac Commune and embankment projects in areas at risk of landslides.

Also, a number of solutions related to forest protection and environmental sanitation in the Cu De river basin, sustainable livelihoods, and community-based ecotourism models were presented.
