The large-scale practice took place at the Vicem Hai Van Cement Factory in Hoa Hiep Bac Ward, Lien Chieu District, on Thursday in order to increase the ability to respond to unexpected incidents, thereby ensuring the marine environment, and achieving the city's goal of developing Da Nang into an environmentally friendly city during the 2021-2030 period.

The oil spill response drill has become an annual activity in the city since 2015. Through the drill, the city's relevant agencies have proactively ensured efficient and effective response to damage caused by oil spill situations in the city in recent years.

According to the drill scenario, due to an unusual thunderstorm, a ship carrying clinker (raw material for cement production) which was handling goods at a specialised port of the Vicem Hai Van Cement Factory under the Vicem Hai Van Cement JSC, collided with the wharf, tearing the hull, bursting the fuel tank and causing an oil spill.

Immediately after the incident, the company quickly coordinated with the Viet Nam Environmental Incident Response Center to deploy incident response according to the motto "4 on the spot".

In addition, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment notified departments, divisions, branches, localities and units to mobilise forces and means from the local Police Department, the Border Guard Command, the Department of Health, People's Committee of Lien Chieu District, and the Center for Oil Spill Response in the Central Region to join the incident response.

Apart from the oil spill response drill, forces and vehicles were also mobilised to practice handling the situation of oil washed ashore by big waves, and prevent the oil from spilling into the Cu De river mouth area.
