1-2 named storms or tropical depressions predicted for the country for the rest of 2023

Viet Nam’s National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting is now calling for 2-3 named storms or tropical depressions to develop in the East Sea for the remainder of 2023, of which one to two could pose direct threat to the country.

There is a weather warning for strong winds and big waves brought by tropical storms or tropical depressions, and the northeast monsoon which will greatly affect marine and fisheries activities nationwide.

There is a more than 95% chance that the El Niño weather pattern will continue in Viet Nam in the next three months.

The average temperature across the country for the rest of 2023 will be about 0.5-1.5 degrees Celsius above previous years.

Cold waves are expected to become milder for the 2023-2024 winter. Accordingly, dangerously extreme cold weather is forecast to arrive in the country later than previous years. The national weather service also indicates that extreme cold events tend to last for a shorter time than in previous years.

Thunderstorms can produce tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong winds which will greatly affect the production and social life nationwide. National forecasters have warned that extreme cold events will pose a threat to health and safety of residents in affected areas.

As per the national weather service, the November precipitation total for the northeast region will be a 10-20% higher than the average amount which fell in previous years. The total rainfall amount is expected to reach 20mm to 40mm in common over the region, 5 - 15mm higher than the average amount which fell in previous years.

In November, the central region is likely to witness a decline of 10-20% in total rainfall compared with the average amount which fell in previous years while an increase of 10-30% in total rainfall is in forecast for the parts from Thanh Hoa to Quang Binh. In December, the total rainfall in North Central Coast is expected to higher than that of previous years by 20-40%.

The November precipitation total for the Mid-Central region and South Central Coast is projected to be approximately equal to the average amount which fell in previous years. The total rainfall amount is expected to reach 20mm to 60mm in common over these areas in January 2024.

The national weather service predicts an accumulated total of 60-150mm of rain for the parts from Southern Nghe An to Quang Nam, including Da Nang, in January 2024, 5-20mm higher than the average amount which fell in previous years.

The precipitation total for Central Highlands and southern region in November and December is projected to be approximately equal to the average amount which fell in previous years. These areas are expected to see little precipitation in January 2024 with rainfalls of 5-15mm.
