The Da Nang government held a ceremony on Saturday to launch the environmental  movement combined with the Tet tree planting campaign at the intersection of Ngo Cao Lang and Tran Nguyen Han streets in Tho Quang Ward, Son Tra District.

Message from city leaders

Delivering his speech at the launching ceremony, municipal People’s Committee Vice Chairman Tran Chi Cuong highlighted that Da Nang is one of the country’s attractive destinations thanks to its amazing landscape and fresh air, and the beauty of a civilised, modern urban area.

Over the past years, the city has been honoured with many environmental titles and awards. In particular, Da Nang topped the country in the application of a set of Environmental Protection Indicators (PEPI) which was issued by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) for two consecutive years 2022 and 2023.

However, Da Nang is still facing many challenges in balancing socio-economic development with environmental protection and nature conservation in the context of climate change, epidemics, and unpredictable natural disasters.

With the goal of continuing to maintain the achieved results and creating a breakthrough in the implementation of the project on building Da Nang into a environmentally friendly city during the 2021-2030 period, Da Nang has launched the environmental protection movement in 2024 with many activities, aiming to create awareness of environmental protection among people, business community and tourists.

Mr. Cuong remarked that the city chose the Son Tra Peninsula Nature Reserve as the location to organise this meaningful event because the place is dubbed a "natural treasure", a "green lung" and a "wind and storm shelter " of the city.

Accordingly, the city launched the Tet Tree Planting Festival associated with forest management, protection and development; effectively deployed the Government's "Planting 1 billion trees" project; carried out the project on building Da Nang into a environmentally friendly city during the 2021-2030 period in accordance with the Da Nang Planning for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050; and turned itself into a large, ecological, smart, unique and sustainable urban area.

Vice Chairman Cuong took the opportunity to call on each agency, unit and person to truly be positive and exemplary factors in protecting the environment, and upholding their responsibility through practical actions.

He also asked agencies, units, communities and people to join hands to carry out activities to protect the environment, nature and biodiversity.

Son Tra District improves quality of natural environment

In response to the call and message of the city leaders and expressing his determination to continue improving the quality of the natural environment in Son Tra District, Chairman of Son Tra District People's Committee Hoang Son Tra pledged that Party committees, authorities, unions, agencies, and units at all levels in the district will strengthen propaganda work and regularly raise awareness about environmental protection and tree planting. This will contribute to preserving the ecological environment, minimising the impact of climate change, and protecting land and water sources, and one's own health.

Special attention will be paid to promoting solid waste classification activities at source, and environmentally friendly consumption, as well as limiting the generation of plastic waste.

Priority will be given to educating environmental protection, love of nature, and biodiversity conservation among pupils, students and young people.

Chairman Tra highlighted that the launching of the Tet tree planting campaign will contribute to forming the landscape of a park serving the needs of entertainment, sports training, and sightseeing for residents and tourists in the coming time.

Also at the launching ceremony, authorised by Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Dang Quoc Khanh, Secretary of the Da Nang Party Committee Nguyen Van Quang awarded the Certificates of Merit to the People's Committee of Da Nang and the municipal Department of Natural Resources and Environment for their outstanding achievements in environmental protection work in the 2021-2022 period.

After the launching ceremony, leaders of the city, departments, agencies, units, localities, and local people participated in planting trees, cleaning up the environment, and collecting garbage in the land along Tran Nguyen Han Street. They also planted coconut trees and picked up trash on a beach in Man Thai Ward, Son Tra District.
