A female tenth grader is among visitors to the NEST Club to ask for help. She came to the Club while she was in the midst of a nervous breakdown, helplessness and feeling confused about herself. Not long ago, this young girl had burst into tears in the crowd as she had been discriminated against at school by a group of her friends because of her physical appearance. During her visits to the NEST Club, she received timely encouragement and comfort from the club’s members. During her stay at the club, its members daily spent their time and effort on talking with her to help her develop her strengths in a bid to boost her self-confidence and performance to improve her appearance-related self-esteem.
As a result, NEST helped this girl become more confident at school in order to develop her artistic talent, and boldly participate in events in her school and class, as well as expand her relationships with others just over 2 months after she received consultation from NEST’s members.
Founded in 2018 by Dang Thuy Trang, a former student of the Hoa Vang Senior High School, NEST now has about 30 members who are students of the Hoa Vang Senior High School and other high schools across the city.
In addition, NEST also sees active involvement of college students and former students of the Hoa Vang Senior High School. The club is focusing on talking school pupils about such social problems as sexual abuse, school violence, and domestic violence, thereby helping them develop awareness and self-defense skills, as well teach them skills to protect themselves.
Furthermore, the club also regularly gives advices and helps school pupils who face deadlocks in life and challenges in school, including stress, academic pressure, family pressure, career choice pressure, and psychosocial changes in puberty and early adolescence.
“I and my friends in the club have already faced challenges during our school life so we can understand the problems that our age group faces in school. Adolescents experience rapid physical, psychological and social development, and they also face difficult questions and decisions about their identity, relationships, education and the future. While adolescence is a time of disorientation, it is also a time of discovery as adolescents can learn more about themselves and develop problem-solving, emotion management and interpersonal skills. They find it difficult to share with others when they face problems related to education, gender, psychological stress and more. Therefore, our Club is willing to become a companion of them when they need help", shared Nguyen Thien Nhan, Head of NEST Club.
Till date, NEST has provided 4 training events for pupils at the Nui Thanh and Hoang Du Khuong primary schools with a focus on teaching them about sexual abuse in order to help keep them safe, as well as teach them to protect the environment. These events have taken place during the flag-raising ceremonies in the school at the beginning of the week, to help school pupils understand more about these issues through integrating training content into illustrative skits along with visual and lively scenes in an effort to make these things more memorable.
In addition, the participants have had the opportunity to participate in drawing events and receive gifts, including handbooks with information about the above–mentioned training content.
Moreover, NEST is also active in getting involved in social and charitable activities. Included are giving Tet gifts to disadvantaged workers in the city, cleaning up the beach, offering gifts to children in mountainous areas
In the coming time, the Club will continue its efforts to spread positivity to young people through social media.
