Practical support for poor veterans in Da Nang

The Veterans Associations at all levels in Da Nang have implemented a program to give social insurance books and health insurance cards to their members in difficult circumstances for many years, contributing to ensuring effective implementation of the city’s social welfare policy, as well as helping their members reduce economic burden and improve the quality of life in them.

In its efforts to demonstrate the nation's morality of solidarity and mutual love, the Veterans Association in Vinh Trung Ward, Thanh Khe District has given high priority to such a program for its poor members.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Hanh, the Head of the Vinh An A2 Chapter, works as a delivery person while his wife is a freelance worker. Therefore, their income only allows them to cover living and medical expenses.

After receiving a health insurance card as a gift from the Veterans Association in Vinh Trung Ward, Mr. Hanh said happily: "Receiving free health care card gives me encouragement to develop a family economy to improve my family’s living conditions, as well as to proactively continue participating in voluntary health insurance when the card runs out. Since the beginning of the year, the donated health insurance card has helped me cover 80 percent of my health care costs for 3 times of medical examinations and treatment at a local healthcare facility."

Mr. Nguyen Khien, the Head of the Tan Lap A Chapter, who is a freelance worker was happy when receiving a social insurance book as gift. His family's living expenses depend on his income from his job as a vehicle keeper in front of a school. Hence, he expects to participate in voluntary social insurance because of ensuring quality of life for him when he grows old and can no longer work, as well as enjoy a pension and other allowances based on the national regulations in addition to be issued a health insurance card.

“After receiving a social insurance book from from the Veterans Association in Vinh Trung Ward, I will try my best to work in a bid to save money to join voluntary social insurance to ensure the future peace of mind," Mr. Khien said.

Recently, the Veterans Association in Vinh Trung Ward has made great efforts to launch awareness raising campaigns, as well as rolled out measures in a diverse and rich way in an attempt to increase the number of people who participate in voluntary social insurance and health insurance.

The Association, has set a target of increasing the rate of well-off and wealthy households to over 65% in 2024.

“We have adopted many solutions to help our members overcome difficulties and stabilize their lives. We hope that they will continue to participate in voluntary social insurance and health insurance when they no longer receive support from us. In addition, we hope that they will play important role in raising public awareness about benefits of voluntary social insurance and health insurance laws in an effort to encourage more people to actively participate in such a scheme to provide them with support and protection against certain risks in life, such as old age, sickness or unemployment (among others)," said Mr. Ninh Cong Nhuong, the Chairman of the Association.

In a similar move, the Veterans Association in Thanh Binh Ward, Hai Chau District, has exerted every effort to gradually improve the material and spiritual life of its officials and members. The Association has given 4 social insurance books and 3 health insurance cards to poor members.

Among the beneficiaries is 67 year-old Phan Duong, the Head of the Tan Lap 3 Branch, who does not have a pension so his living expenses depend on his children’s financial support.

“The health insurance card is a meaningful gift for me as it helps me access high-quality health care services at low cost, as well as reduce the financial burden on me when suffering from an illness," Mr. Duong said.

Mr. Nguyen Van Thinh, the Chairman of the Veterans Association in Thanh Binh Ward, said that the program helps its members reduce the economic burden of medical costs when suffering from an illness. At the same time, it also helps raise public awareness about benefits of voluntary social insurance law.

Initiated in 2022 by the Da Nang Veterans Association, the program have till date provided health insurance support worth nearly VND 900 million in total for 126 people in difficult circumstances, along with 79 health insurance cards totaling more than VND 80 million for others.

In the coming time, the municipal Veterans Association will continue its efforts to implement this program so that all poor members can enjoy benefits from voluntary social insurance law.
