After three years of implementing the Central Government's project "Planting one billion trees in the 2021-2025 period", the portion of trees planted in Da Nang has only reached 20.42% of the set target. Therefore, the city, the agriculture and rural development sector, and localities are synchronously rolling out many solutions to overcome difficulties and bring the project to the finish line as scheduled.

Promoting tree planting movements

Son Tra District effectively responded to the tree planting movement and launched the post-Lunar New Year tree planting festival.

In the 2021-2023 period, a total of 5,728 trees were planted in the district, including 3,705 scattered trees is 3,705 trees, and 2,023 concentrated afforestation trees.

Vice Chairman of Son Tra District People's Committee Huynh Van Hung said that to effectively implement the aforementioned project, the district has asked localities and units to organize the planting of trees according to plans, and ensure practicality, efficiency, unobtrusiveness and formality of the post-Tet tree planting festival.

To date, the number of trees planted from 2021-2023 is growing and being well managed and cared for. Nearly 2,500 trees are expected to be planted across the district in 2024-2025, Mr. Hung said.

Besides localities, many units and organisations have carried out tree planting activities, and accompanied the city to effectively implement the project "Planting one billion trees in the 2021-2025 period".

For instance, the Green Viet Biodiversity Conservation Center (GreenViet) has launched the programme "One million urban green trees".

Mr. Tran Huu Vy, Director of GreenViet, said that Da Nang was one of three key localities supported by the "One million urban green trees" programme for the 2020-2030 period with the goal of planting 100,00 trees on about 70 hectares.

GreenViet has so far supported localities in the city to plant and care for 19,137 urban trees, and more than 50,000 large native trees (equivalent to 41.1 hectares) in Hoa Vang District.

In March 2024, GreenViet implemented the project "Bringing forests back to their origins" under the programme "One million urban green trees" from funding sources.

The center has supported the city to plant 39,600 large trees with a total forest area of about 30 hectares.

It has coordinated with the People's Committee of Nai Hien Dong Ward to plant more than 250 purple Lagerstroemia speciosa trees at the Nai Hien Dong Residential Park.

It is expected that GreenViet Center will plant about 1,000-2,000 urban trees in the city; and 20,000 large trees in Hoa Vang District; by the end of 2024 with sponsorship from businesses and international organisations.

Focus on solving problems

Under the project "Planting one billion trees in the 2021-2025 period", the city targets to plant more than 5 million trees by late 2025.

However, during the 2023-2025 period, only over one million trees have been already grown in the city, achieving 35.52% of the 3-year plan and 20.42% of the plan target.

The actual implementation of the project still faces some difficulties due to the increasingly limited land fund for afforestation, which is often transferred to other uses for socio-economic development.

Besides, preparing seedlings does not "go hand in hand" with protection, management and maintenance.

The municipal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said that the implementation of the task in the last 2 years encountered some difficulties due to the increasingly narrow land fund for new forests. Therefore, the department proposed that the municipal People's Committee reduce the number of plants in accordance with local practice.

On the other hand, the department suggested central ministries and branches to have a mechanism, guide and allow the use of annual non-business capital sources, thereby creating conditions for localities to proactively plant trees.

The unit stressed the need for the city to continue to strengthen propaganda and mobilise people to participate in planting trees; as well as have policies to invest and support green tree varieties and multi-purpose trees for households with vacant land funds and home garden land to develop the garden economy and create environmental landscapes.

Meanwhile, the city's agricultural sector will coordinate with units and localities to review land funds, mobilise socialized resources, and strive to complete the tree planting plan in the 2024-2025.
