Murals painted by young artists on the walls of Yen Khe 1 Street in Thanh Khe Tay Ward, Thanh Khe District, have transformed the area, replacing the old, moss-covered walls with vibrant new artwork.
Murals painted by young artists on the walls of Yen Khe 1 Street in Thanh Khe Tay Ward, Thanh Khe District, have transformed the area, replacing the old, moss-covered walls with vibrant new artwork.

Over the past month, those passing by Yen Khe 1 Street near the Da Nang University of Physical Education and Sports have encountered a lively and colourful mural road. Dozens of large-scale paintings depicting the beauty of the city and the country adorn the walls, leaving passersby in awe of the vibrant art.

Phan Thi Nhat Anh, a 20-year-old student from the city-based Duy Tan University, who visited a friend studying national defence knowledge at the Da Nang University of Physical Education and Sports, took the opportunity to film the murals as she walked by.

"The murals are very lively, and they hold significant meaning in telling the story of Vietnamese culture. I can understand the story depicted in each painting. Moreover, this mural area is close to the school, which will greatly benefit creativity and learning, and foster a love for the homeland among the students" shared Nhat Anh.

Each section of the wall along the road features images that evoke childhood memories, such as playing during the Mid-Autumn Festival, herding buffaloes, swimming in the river, or traditional games like blindfolded goat-catching, marbles, kite-flying, and tug-of-war.

A total of 41 volunteers, mainly students from the Faculty of Architecture of the Da Nang University of Architecture engaged in drawing these beautiful murals in 15 days.

Nguyen Trung, a fourth-year student majoring in interior design at the University of Architecture and the leader of the group, shared that the students wanted to contribute their diverse ideas with various messages to refresh the old walls, conveying cultural stories to the community, especially the local residents.

Thanks to the great determination and dedication of the young participants, dozens of murals were completed within 15 days in the near-38-degree Celsius heat.

Ngo Tuan Anh, Secretary of the Youth Union organisation of the Da Nang University of Architecture, noted that the outdoor project faced challenges, particularly during the hot midday sun and thunderstorms in the afternoon. However, with the encouragement of local authorities and the support of residents, the project team was able to complete the murals on schedule. Leveraging their academic strengths, the youth expressed a wide range of ideas through the murals, contributing to a greener, cleaner, and more beautiful street.

During a weekend coffee break with her family at a café on Yen Khe 1 Street, overlooking the cool Phu Loc River, Tran Thuc Lan from Hoa Minh Ward, Lien Chieu District, took the opportunity to snap some photos with her two children.

"In the midst of the bustling city, there's a peaceful space filled with childhood memories that makes everyone passing by pause to capture some keepsake photos. I see the educational value in these murals regarding environmental protection and cultural preservation, which the artists have beautifully conveyed" Lan remarked.

Similarly, Pham Thi Minh Nguyet, a street vendor selling bubble tea and snacks on Yen Khe 1 Street, noted that with the cool, clean, and beautifully mural-decorated surroundings, more young people are coming to view the art.

"No one would have thought that this place used to be a dumping ground for waste and construction debris, with overgrown weeds causing environmental issues. Thanks to the mural road, my evening business has become more popular" Nguyet shared.

According to Mr Doan Van Giang, Vice Chairman of Thanh Khe Tay Ward People's Committee, the murals have transformed the street's appearance, creating a space that connects the community and links to other areas.

"The vibrant and charming images carry strong messages of public awareness, raising local residents' consciousness, especially among the younger generation," he said.

"In the future, we plan to identify areas at risk of environmental pollution to expand these initiatives. With meaningful activities like this, the youth have significantly contributed to improving the landscape and maintaining environmental cleanliness" Mr Giang added.
