Impact of mock trials

In line with the municipal Youth Union’s plan to implement the Politburo’s Directive No. 36-CT/TW on enhancing the effectiveness of drug prevention and control, mock trials have been used in recent years as an effective legal awareness tool.

In June 2024, the Youth Union organisation in Cam Le District, in cooperation with the Hoa Phat Ward-based People's Committee in the district, organised a mock trial on the case of “Illegal Drug Trading and Possession” with the participation of over 100 youth members.

Mr. Le Thanh Hai, Deputy Secretary of the Youth Union organisation of Cam Le District, explained that the mock trial was based on a real case, recreating the criminal proceedings accurately. The trial content was tailored to local conditions, allowing participants to answer questions related to the case, thereby reinforcing their legal knowledge on drug possession and trafficking.

He noted that rather than a dry presentation of legal terms, the "staged" approach of a mock trial helps youth engage with the entire legal process. This method improves their understanding of regulations and enhances their awareness of legal compliance.

Similarly, the Youth Union organisation of Hai Chau District recently conducted a successful mock trial in partnership with the District Prosecutor’s Office to educate youth on legal issues.

Mr. Le Vien Thanh, Deputy Secretary of the Youth Union organisation of Hai Chau District, believes that innovating and diversifying legal education methods for youth is crucial.

Mock trials are seen as a novel, engaging, and effective educational tool. They provide youth with insights into party policies and state laws, particularly criminal law, helping to prevent legal violations among young people and promoting a responsible and cultured lifestyle.

Enhancing awareness

During the Action month for Drug Prevention and Control in 2024, the municipal Youth Union, in collaboration with the municipal Department of Public Security, organised a talk entitled "Starting Life Over" for 120 individuals under post-rehabilitation management.

After the talk, the young participants expressed regret over their past mistakes involving drug addiction, vowing to stay away from drugs and strive to be good citizens in a bid to start anew.

Over the past five years, youth organisations in the city have conducted nearly 1,490 activities to educate and raise awareness about drug prevention, HIV/AIDS, and social issues, reaching over 71,980 youth. Additionally, they have held 358 drug prevention competitions attracting more than 100,000 participants.

To continuously improve legal awareness and compliance regarding drug prevention, the municipal Youth Union directs its chapters to sign commitments and encourage members, students, and youth to adhere to legal regulations. They also promote active participation in crime detection, reporting, and reforming individuals within the community.

Leveraging digital technology and social media, Youth Union organisations are increasing the creation and sharing of visual infographics, engaging videos, and short films about new drugs, their identification, and the dangers and consequences of drug use.

Furthermore, they are targeting students, youth, and unemployed individuals at risk of legal violations, aiming to raise awareness and prevent drug addiction, and work towards eradicating drugs from the community.
