Backing fishermen at sea
In recent years, the city’s functional forces have consistently prioritised rescue, relief, and support activities, working alongside fishermen to help them venture out to sea and sustain their livelihoods. These efforts have significantly contributed to the development of the maritime economy and the protection of marine resources, paving the way for a sustainable, eco-friendly fishing industry.

As the stormy season approaches in Da Nang, the fishing activities continue unabated, accompanied by the ongoing support of rescue and relief efforts. Fisherman Nguyen Duc Tien, Head of the Tien Len Solidarity Boat Group in Nai Hien Dong Ward, Son Tra District, views fishing not only as a way to provide for his family but also as a patriotic effort to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty over its sea and islands.
"A few years ago, our boat encountered difficulties, drifting aimlessly at sea. Fortunately, we were rescued by the Son Tra Border Guard Station and the Da Nang-based Regional Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre No 2. It was as if we were given a second chance at life. When we returned to shore, we were reunited with our families, received medical check-ups, and were given essential supplies. The authorities truly stand by us on each fishing expedition, offering a firm foundation for us to confidently fish in distant waters" said Tien.
Senior Lieutenant Colonel Tran Doan Toan, Political Commissar of the Son Tra Border Guard Station, emphasised the importance of collaboration with the Regional Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre II to ensure the timely rescue and relief of fishermen and crew members during maritime incidents.
According to Mr. Toan, the station’s personnel, especially those directly involved in rescue operations at sea, are always prepared to treat fishermen as they would their own family members. Each mission is undertaken with a high level of determination and readiness to ensure the safety of both fishermen and their assets, regardless of the challenges posed by the sea.
As part of the government’s broader development strategy, the Prime Minister approved the planning of fishing ports and storm shelters for fishing vessels for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision towards 2050. This includes the establishment of a major fishing centre in Da Nang, closely linked to the East Sea and Hoang Sa fishing grounds in Tho Quang Ward, Son Tra District.
Over the years, the border guards and the Regional Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre II have formed a close bond with local fishermen. These forces not only provide material and medical assistance but also help repair equipment both before and during long fishing expeditions. However, fishermen like Nguyen Duc Tien hope for even more timely rescue efforts, particularly during the stormy season, and greater cooperation among fishermen during offshore fishing.
"When engaging in distant fishing, if the boat breaks down or there’s an accident, we have no means to handle it. We worry that in the next 5-10 years, future generations may not continue this profession. We hope the government and local authorities will issue more specific regulations to make rescue and relief efforts even more proactive, truly becoming the 'steadfast support on the front lines' for fishermen, while also helping protect our nation’s sacred maritime sovereignty," Mr. Tien shared.
In addition, Mr. Tien and other fishermen are urging local authorities to invest in the expansion of storm shelters for fishing vessels and further develop fishery support services. They also hope for more support for fishing unions, providing fishermen with the security needed to continue venturing out to sea, thereby not only fostering economic growth but also protecting the sovereignty of the nation’s seas and islands.
