Proactive measures against heavy rains and river flooding
On the afternoon of November 23, the Mid-Central Region Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting predicted that, from the evening of November 23 until the end of November 24, provinces such as Thua Thien Hue, Quang Nam, and Quang Ngai would experience moderate to heavy rain. Scattered showers, with localized heavy downpours, are expected in Quang Tri Province and Da Nang during the night of November 23. Rainfall is anticipated to gradually decrease and cease by the evening of November 24.
There is a risk of flash floods and landslides in mountainous areas, as well as flooding in low-lying and urban regions of Thua Thien Hue, Quang Nam, and Quang Ngai.
A flood wave is expected on the Vu Gia River and other rivers in Da Nang, with flood peaks on the Vu Gia River likely to reach warning level 1 to just below level 2. Rivers in Da Nang may fluctuate between levels slightly below and slightly above warning level 1.
Flood peaks on the Cu De River are forecasted to range from 12-14m at Ta Lang - Gian Bi Bridge, 1.5-2m at Truong Dinh Bridge, and 2-2.5m at Tuy Loan Bridge.
Flooding risks remain in low-lying areas along rivers, urban centres, and mountainous regions prone to landslides and flash floods in Da Nang.
From the night of November 23 to 24, Da Nang’s coastal areas and the Hoang Sa Archipelago are expected to experience strong winds at levels 5-6, with gusts up to level 7. Waves are predicted to reach 2-3.5m, while the Hoang Sa region may experience stronger gusts and waves of 2-4m.
To proactively respond to the situation, Da Nang’s Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue, and Civil Defence has issued directives urging agencies, departments, localities, and units to implement Notification No. 36/TB-PCTT, dated 20 November 2024.
Authorities have been tasked to inspect high-risk areas, such as residential zones, workplaces, and military sites, that are vulnerable to landslides, flash floods, and flooding. Appropriate safety measures are to be implemented.
The municipal Department of Natural Resources and Environment will lead efforts to prevent landslides and ensure environmental cleanup following the heavy rain. Meanwhile, the Department of Information and Communications, along with related units, will regularly update information on the disaster situation to raise public awareness and ensure timely response.
The Border Guard Command, coastal district authorities, and the Da Nang Coastal Radio Station will notify vessel owners and operators about strong winds and rough seas, while closely managing maritime activities to ensure safety.
