Da Nang’s orientation to become an environmentally-friendly city in the 2021 - 2030 period has been established, in which sustainable energy development plays an important role.
According to the renewable energy development plan, by 2030, Da Nang will add 30 MW of rooftop solar power, develop 18 MW of electricity from solid waste treatment, and encourage energy saving and efficiency.

Many projects have been implemented in the city such as installing 801 rooftop solar power systems with a total capacity of 5,255 MWp; converting public lighting to LED; supporting the installation of solar water heaters; piloting the operation of 4-wheel electric vehicles to serve tourists.

However, to realize these goals, the city needs active participation from the community, businesses and government agencies in accepting, investing, using and managing sustainable energy technologies.

According to Vice President of the Union of Science and Technology Associations of Da Nang Nguyen Dinh Phuc, Da Nang has implemented many programmes to build factories and solar power plants, but up to now, only small-scale solar power plants of businesses and families have been implemented. The development of solar energy still has certain limitations.

Meanwhile, the demand for electricity is increasing. To use energy sustainably, it is a need to use power source in a balanced way between production and use, in addition to abundant sources.

Therefore, at the workshop, delegates were informed of the need to improve capacity in the field of sustainable energy, the level of practices of the government and business representatives on sustainable energy.

The advantages and challenges of people, cooperatives and enterprises in developing renewable energy were also put into discussions. At the same time, the issues and needs in building capacity for sustainable energy practices of people, enterprises and local authorities were also identified.

The programme assessed the needs for building capacity for sustainable energy practices of people, enterprises and authorities in Da Nang towards building appropriate and effective intervention strategies and contributing to implementing Plan 198/KH-UBND on developing renewable energy in the city according to the National Power Development Plan for the 2021 - 2030 period, with a vision toward 2050.
